Hawks come close in region opener

| October 12, 2010 9:00 PM

MOSCOW - Brian Hann, a defender, scored an unassisted goal from 30 yards out for the Hawks late in the second half to tie up the match, but AJ Gayler found the net off a Kadin McGreevy feed to give Moscow a 2-1 win in the 4A Region 1 tournament opener on Monday.

"We played well, compared to the first two times we played them," Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. "Both teams came out flat, but we had some good opportunities and just missed a couple."

Haynes said the team definitely got better as the season progressed and the Hawks (2-15) were able to challenge Moscow for the first time this year.

"Chris Jackson did well in goal for us," he said. "He's just a freshman and is pretty inexperienced, but he was strong in net for us."

With the win, the Bears (10-8) will take on host Sandpoint (10-5) on Thursday for a berth at state.
