| October 11, 2010 1:05 PM

Feb. 23, 1943 - Oct. 10, 2010

A champion for kids, avid outdoorsman and collector of classic cars, Harold Vincent Shockley was born on Feb. 23, 1943, to Cecil and Vivian Shockley in Mountain Home. He graduated high school from Coeur d'Alene High School in Coeur d'Alene and continued his schooling at North Idaho College, Eastern Washington University (B.A. & MEd) and the University of Idaho (Ph.D.).

A dedicated educator, Harold worked diligently for kids throughout the west for more than 40 years. He began his career as a fourth-grade teacher, a position that introduced him to his wife of 43 years Rosemary. He continued his career serving as a principal in Moscow; vice president of the Private Education Corporation in Glasgow, Mont.; deputy superintendent in both Baker, Ore., and Evanston, Wyo.; and superintendent in both Powell, Wyo., and Marsing. Always one to put kids first, Harold took a hands-on approach to solving problems and had an open door policy for every member of his staff, parents and students.

An avid car lover and collector, Harold began his love of all things motorized early in his life, building "hot rods" in his mother's garage to take racing at the Deer Park Dragstrip in Deer Park, Wash., as well as throughout the northwest and Canada. While he decided to end racing to pursue his career in education and have a family, Harold continued his love and admiration for cars throughout his life, building and driving classic cars to events throughout the northwest. He was a member of the Coachmen car club in Coeur d'Alene and the Triers car club in Billings, Mont.

Harold is survived by his wife, Rosemary Shockley; daughter Tamitha Anderson; mother Vivian Burtzoff; brothers Dwane (wife Vetra) and Calvin (wife Judy) Shockley; brother-in-law Bill Marsik; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless friends.

Special thanks to Dr. Alice Forsythe; Horizon Hospice, especially nurse Ermalinda; Lynde Smith and numerous other health care professionals who cared for Harold so that he could be at home until he passed on Oct. 10, 2010, with his family by his side.

A service of remembrance will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at the Marsing Church of the Nazarene, 112 West Second Ave., Marsing. It will be immediately followed by a celebration of life.

In honor of Harold's lifelong commitment to education and love of kids, the family has established the Harold Shockley Memorial Scholarship at Marsing School District in Marsing. In lieu of flowers or plants, those who wish to honor Harold can do so through supporting this fund: Harold Shockley Memorial Scholarship, c/o Marsing School District, P.O. Box 340, Marsing, ID 83639.
