Griz legend, ex-Yankee

to speak at NIC boosters

COEUR d’ALENE — Former New York Yankee and soon-to-be Grizzly Sports Hall of Famer Ed Anderson will be the featured speaker at the North Idaho College Booster Club luncheon Tuesday at the Coeur d’Alene Outback Steakhouse.

Anderson played catcher behind Yankees Yogi Berra and Elston Howard. Also on that same Yankee team were Don Larsen, Billy Martin and Mickey Mantle.

Coming out of Missoula County High, Anderson earned nine letters in football, basketball and baseball while competing for the Grizzlies in the early 1950s. He is the only Montana athlete to earn first-team All-Skyline Conference honors as a college football, basketball and baseball player.

In arguably his best sport, Anderson played catcher for the Grizzly baseball team. He batted a team-high .423 in 1953 and .385 in 1954 and was a second team All-American selection. Anderson, who was awarded the 1954 Grizzly Cup, went on to sign a pro contract with the New York Yankees.

After his stint with the Yankees, Anderson coached football and basketball at Great Falls, Flathead and Samamish high schools before moving to the college ranks at Pacific Lutheran University. At PLU, Anderson coached baseball, football and JV basketball until he became the head men’s basketball coach from 1976 to 1983. He won three straight Northwest Conference championships at PLU.

Anderson will be inducted into the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame in Missoula on Nov. 12.
