Late goal downs Chiefs

SPOKANE — Ryan Johansen scored with 29.5 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Portland Winterhawks a 3-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs in front of 4,911 at the Spokane Arena in Western Hockey League action on Friday.

Spokane’s (2-4) Jared Cowen scored his first goal of the season to tie the game 1-1. Blake Gal scored a shorthanded goal midway through the first to put the Chiefs on top 2-1.

Sven Bartschi had two goals for Portland in the first.

Mac Carruth had 46 saves for Portland, which was outshot 22-5 in the third period and 48-19 for the game.

Spokane finished the night 0 for 8 on the power play.

The teams play again tonight at 7 at the Spokane Arena.
