Heth, Timberlake run past upstart St. Maries

ST. MARIES — Junior Christian Heth had 160 yards rushing for four touchdowns as the Timberlake Tigers defeated the St. Maries Lumberjacks 49-28 on Friday night in Intermountain League action.

“Timberlake just ran the ball like crazy,” said St. Maries coach Craig Tefft, whose team was looking for back-to-back league wins after not winning an IML game since 2008. “They were 6, 7, 8 yards and a cloud of dust. We just had a hard time stopping them tonight.”

Devin Smith had 132 yards rushing and one touchdown for Timberlake (2-4, 2-0 IML), which travels to Moscow on Friday.

Brad Anderson had 219 yards rushing for St. Maries (3-4, 1-2), which travels to Riverside on Friday.

RATHDRUM — Eric Cooper threw four touchdowns for the Hawks in a nonleague win over the Greyhounds (2-4) at Corbit Field.

Hunter Arno and Cory Thorne had two touchdowns each receiving, with Brendon Kedish scoring twice on runs for Lakeland (2-5), which hosts Sandpoint in the 4A Inland Empire League opener for both on Friday.

“It was kind of a tight game early on,” Lakeland coach Tim Kiefer said. “They had a couple of turnovers, but our kids kept battling. We had our heels on the edge a few times, but never gave up.”

Post Falls

SPOKANE — Tori Bertsch and Allison Meehan had seven assists apiece for the Trojans in a 25-16, 25-18 loss to the Eagles in the Crossover Classic at Lewis and Clark High.

Ashley Jibby had four kills for Post Falls (21-2), which faces Jackson High of Everett and Moses Lake today in pool play.

Lakeland

SPOKANE — Kaitlyn Whitesitt had four kills for the Hawks in a 25-22, 25-13 loss to the Panthers in their match in pool play of the Crossover Classic at Ferris High.

“We played well in the first game,” Lakeland coach Claudia Ebel said. “We hung right in there with them and kind of got taken off the floor in the second game. It was kind of like two different games.”

Erin Odgen had 13 digs and Sonora Wilkes had seven assists for Lakeland (2-17), which faces Pasco and Heritage today to conclude pool play.

MOSCOW — Jamil Lawyer and Matt Lieggi each had a goal and an assist for the visiting Cardinals, who did all their scoring in the second half.

“We didn’t lose our composure,” NIC coach Scott Moorcroft said. “Their keeper (Beau Martin) made some phenomenal saves in the first half, but we kept our composure. In the second half, we just needed to get him moving side to side.”

NIC (5-7-1) plays host to the Boise State club team on Sunday.
