Bike ride to benefit school, trail
An October bike ride on the Prairie Trail will provide a healthy outing for families while raising funds for Lakes Magnet Middle School and the Centennial Trail Foundation.
"Saddle-Soup-Skedaddle" is being sponsored by 4th Street Cycling Club, the Fort Ground Grill and Bicycle Sales & Service. The non-race event will begin between 11 and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Fort Ground Grill, 705 River Ave.
The ride will proceed north on the Prairie Trail portion of the Centennial Trail, then return to the restaurant where bicyclists can enjoy a lunch of soup, sandwich and a beverage. Cost of the ride with lunch is $15 per person, or $45 per family. Those who wish to only come for lunch may also do so for $15 anytime between noon and 2:30 p.m.
Participants are eligible for door prizes which will be awarded between noon and 2:30 p.m.
Organizer Kent Eggleston said the event "is an opportunity for families, individuals, couples, businesses, and people who just want to get involved in their community to join in and have some fun riding bicycles and getting a great lunch and raise some money for our schools and trails."
Proceeds from the event will benefit maintenance of the Centennial Trail and will purchase special supplies for the magnet classes at Lakes.
About 60 riders participated in last year's Saddle-Soup-Skedaddle that raised about $500.
Panhandle State Bank has joined this fall's event by matching the amount that will be donated to Lakes Magnet School.
