St. Maries clinches 7th straight IML volleyball title

ST. MARIES — Marlee Masterson had 14 kills and two aces as the St. Maries Lumberjacks defeated the Kellogg Wildcats 25-9, 25-19, 25-16 on Tuesday night to claim their seventh consecutive Intermountain League title.
“I thought the first game went pretty well and then we started to make some mistakes in the second and third game,” St. Maries coach Missy Asbury said. “Overall, Marlee and Lakin (Anxo) had good games, as did Tia (Asbury) in the back row. We’re starting to get more confident about running plays and mixing things up a bit on offense.”
Mariah Gladden had nine kills, five blocks and two aces, Tia Asbury had 18 digs, Anxo had eight digs and Jaylee Sines had 23 assists for St. Maries (17-2, 6-0 IML), which travels to the Crossover Classic on Saturday at Ferris High.
Kellogg falls to 9-5, 3-3 and travels to the Crossover Classic on Friday.

BONNERS FERRY — Kelly Madsen had six kills, two aces and 11 digs for the Tigers in a 25-20, 25-18, 25-19 Intermountain League win over the Badgers.
Halee Edelblute had 11 assists and two aces and Hannah Moseley had six kills for Timberlake (16-6, 3-3 IML), which travels to Priest River on Thursday.
Mattea Bertling had seven kills, two blocks and three aces, Olivia Langs had six digs and Ivy Dirks had 15 assists for Bonners Ferry (12-13, 1-7), which travels to the Crossover Classic on Saturday in Spokane.

Coeur d’Alene
SANDPOINT — Blake Plaster had 13 digs and two aces and Ariel Moe 16 assists to lead Sandpoint to a 25-23, 25-20, 25-14 victory over Coeur d’Alene at Les Rogers Court.
Sam Buratto led the Bulldogs (7-4) with seven kills and Ashley Shepard tallied six.
Kylie Curtis had six kills, six assists and three aces and Ashley Hammons six digs and six assists in defeat for the Vikings (8-14), who never seemed to find a rhythm offensively.
Coeur d’Alene plays host to Gonzaga Prep next Tuesday.

CLARK FORK — Jennifer Mitchell had 16 aces, 24 assists and three blocks for the Knights in a 25-20, 25-20, 17-25, 26-24 North Star League win over the Wampus Cats.
“It was a fun match to watch and be a part of,” Lakeside coach Jan Mitchell said. “The girls came out well and we were behind most of the fourth game, but came back and took it from them.”
Joelle Miller had 17 kills and four blocks, Maria Garcia had 20 digs and Francine Hendrickx had 16 digs for Lakeside (9-1, 7-1 NSL), which hosts Coeur d’Alene Charter on Thursday.
Brocklynn Thorton had 15 kills for Clark Fork (9-3, 6-1), which travels to Timberlake on Oct. 13.

“We were kind of short today with injuries and suspensions,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Lake said. “Parker Heisey subbed in nicely in the midfield today. It’s no excuse to play without some starters, but we need to work on a few things before regionals.”

ST. MARIES — The visiting Scotties scored three first-half goals in the nonleague game against the Lumberjacks.
St. Maries (0-15-1, 0-9-1 Intermountain League) is the No. 6 seed to the 3A District 1-2 tournament, which begins Saturday at Lakeland High. St. Maries plays No. 3 Kellogg (4-4-3, 4-3-3) in a loser-out game at 1 p.m., with the winner advancing to play No. 2 seed Orofino (10-3-2, 7-2-1) next Wednesday at 2 p.m.
In Saturday’s other loser-out game at 1 p.m., No. 4 Priest River (5-9-1, 4-5-1) plays No. 5 Bonners Ferry (2-5-6, 2-5-3). That winner plays top-seeded Timberlake (8-3-3, 7-0-3) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
The championship game is Oct. 14 at 4 p.m., with the winner advancing to state Oct. 21-23 in Twin Falls. The loser plays the District 3 runner-up on Oct. 16 in Lewiston for a berth to state.
