Lt. Col. (AF Ret) Dean DeLos Bartlett, 81

Lt. Col. (AF Ret) Dean DeLos Bartlett passed away Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, after a 15-year struggle with cancer. He was born Sept. 26, 1929, in Missoula, Mont., to Alton and Ethel (Andersen) Bartlett.

Dean graduated from Missoula County High School in 1947. He entered the Navy in 1948 as a control tower operator. He was based in Memphis, Tenn., Olatha, Kan., and Jacksonville, Fla.

After his discharge in 1952, Dean attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla., on the Korean GI Bill. He graduated with a B.A. in math and physics in 1955.

Dean was commissioned in the Air Force in 1955, assigned to the 464th Troop Carrier Wing, Pope AFB, N.C. From there he went to Keflavik AFB, Iceland, 1956-57. From Keflavik, he returned to Florida State and entered the USAF Meteorological Masters Program. From 1959-66 he was with the Strategic Air Command in Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio. After SAC he transferred to Missile School and was stationed at Malstrom, Mont. After a tour in Germany, he was reassigned to Headquarter SAC, Offutt AFB, Neb. His last tour was at Frankfurt, Germany V Corps Commanders Staff as Staff Weather Officer. Dean retired in 1978.

After retiring, he married Doris Hagdorn and they lived in Germany for another 12 years, until she retired from the Department of Defense Dependent School System. Dean loved Germany and made full use of the hunting opportunities there. He also enjoyed cross-country skiing, volksmarching, hiking and camping in Garmisch. During retirement he also earned a Master's of Science degree in System Management from USC.

Dean is a member of the Post Falls Kiwanis and Catholic War Veterans-Post 1950. He also volunteered his expertise as an AARP-Tax-Aide. Golf, woodworking and reading were other hobbies of his.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; daughters Mary (Philip) Sapienza, Louisville, Ky.; Cindy Bartlett, New Orleans, La.; sons Ken and Paul Bartlett both of Florida. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; his sister, Francis Atkinson, Ogden, Utah, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by his sisters, RaNae Harris and Lois Bartlett; his brothers, Bert Bartlett and DeVon Bartlett; and his parents, Alton and Ethel Bartlett.

Many thanks to Dr. Tezcan and all the nurses and aides at the Cancer Centers and the oncology ward. Their help and compassion was limitless.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at St. Pius Catholic Church, 625 Haycraft, Coeur d'Alene. Dean will be cremated and interred at the St. Pius Columbarium once construction is complete.
