“It took us about 15 minutes to get up to their speed of play,” NIC coach Dan Hogan said. “They are definitely the toughest team we’ve played in quite awhile.”

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Jamil Lawyer scored likely the fastest goal in NIC history — just 20 seconds into the match — but that was it for the Cardinals against their foe from Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Off the opening kickoff, Lawyer made a run down the right side, ran onto a long ball from Ethan Olson, and headed it over the head of the onrushing keeper from 12 yards out and into the goal.

Iowa Western countered with two goals in the first half and two more in the second.

“The first two goals we gave them were mistakes we made in the back defensively,” NIC coach Scott Moorcroft said.

NIC (4-5-1) plays Laramie County Community College today in Laramie.

First half — 1, NIC, Jamil Lawyer (Ethan Olson), 20 seconds. 2, IW, Klees Makaya (unassisted), 12:00. 3, IW, Leigh Veidman (Ignatio Mateos), 25:00. Second half — 4, IW, Mohamed Salama (unassisted), 60:00. 5, IW, Mateos (penalty kick), 72:00.

RANGLEY, Colo. — Kaylee Ponce had 10 kills for the 10th-ranked Cardinals in a 25-15, 25-15, 25-8 win over the Spartans in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match.

Esther Timofeyev and Danielle Hodge had nine kills apiece as NIC won on back-to-back nights on the road after defeating Eastern Utah in five games on Friday.

“It was a quick turnaround for us this weekend,” NIC coach Colleen Frohlich said. “Our girls did a good job of staying strong mentally.”

Kyona Hunt had 13 digs, Gabriella Rifilato had 20 assists and four aces and Brenna Peterson had 19 assists for NIC (17-5, 3-0 SWAC), which played without outside hitter Fei Gao, who was rested on Saturday.

“We got everyone in today,” Frohlich said. “We served well and were passing the ball well and it gave us some confidence going into a big week at home.”

NIC hosts Snow College on Thursday and No. 2 Salt Lake on Saturday at Christianson Gymnasium.
