COEUR d’ALENE — With the regular season coming to a close, both the Coeur d’Alene Vikings and Lake City Timberwolves knew that Thursday’s match was one that each needed for seeding entering the Region 1 tournament in two weeks.

After 80 minutes, neither team could gain the edge on the other as the match ended in a 1-1 draw at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex at Lake City.

“We came out looking for the win,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Lake said. “We wanted to get the first seed in the league. We didn’t come out with any intensity in the first half and we’re disappointed with the outcome.”

The teams battled to a scoreless tie at halftime before Lake City midfielder Chris Wheelock drove a corner kick into the net on an assist from Donald Osborne-Moss.

“I was excited the ball was there for me,” Wheelock said. “It’s a really good feeling to be winning at some point in a match. It was a good game and both teams played hard. I just wish we could have put another goal in. (Lake City fresman goalkeeper) Tanner (Horton) was the man today.”

Coeur d’Alene (9-2-2), which hosts Sandpoint on Tuesday, finishes 5A IEL play 4-1-1 and leads Post Falls (3-1 in league) with the Trojans having two more games in the IEL on the schedule.

Viking junior forward Adam Borshiem scored on a penalty kick in the 50th minute after Lake City was called for a hand-ball in the penalty box. Keagan Schillington had four saves for Coeur d’Alene, before leaving in the 75th minute with a leg injury.

“We’ve got to root for Lake City if we want to achieve our goals of being the top seed,” Lake said. “We could have controlled our destiny, but we didn’t get it done today.”

“Both teams had some great chances and opportunities,” Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. Our guys battled and I was more impressed with how we came to play.”

Lake City (7-3-2, 2-2-1) travels to Post Falls on Thursday to conclude its 5A IEL schedule.
