NAIA baseball World Series begins tonight in Lewiston
LEWISTON - With three locals on the roster, the top-ranked Lewis-Clark State Warriors baseball team sets out in search of a 17th national title when the NAIA World Series begins tonight at Harris Field.
L-C State (47-3) earned a first-round bye, and will open Saturday at 7 p.m. vs. the winner of today's noon game between No. 8 seed Belhaven, Miss. (43-15) and No. 9 Point Loma Nazarene, Calif. (38-18).
In today's other openers, No. 4 Lee, Tenn. (49-11) plays defending champion and No. 5 seed Lubbock Christian, Texas (46-14) at 3 p.m.; No. 6 Oklahoma City (49-14) meets No. 3 California Baptist (48-13) at 7:30 p.m., and No. 7 Embry-Riddle, Fla. (44-17) takes on No. 10 Tennessee Wesleyan (46-16) at 8:30 a.m.
No. 2 seed Cumberland, Tenn. (53-9) opens Saturday at 3 p.m. vs. the Embry-Riddle/Tennessee Wesleyan winner.
The double-elimination tournament will wrap up either June 3 or 4.
For Lewis-Clark State, sophomore Trent Bridges (Lake City High) is batting .356 (32 for 90) through May 10, with 0 homers and 16 RBIs; sophomore Zach Clanton (Lake City) is 2-0 with a 3.63 ERA and two saves, with 16 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings; and senior Travis Georgius (Coeur d'Alene High) is batting .227 with one homer and 12 RBIs.
Third-ranked Shock to host top-ranked Jacksonville
SPOKANE - The Spokane Shock (5-2) moved up to third from fourth in this week's Arena Football League coaches poll.
The Jacksonville Sharks (6-1), ranked No. 1, visit Spokane on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Spokane Tribe Field at Spokane Arena.
Chris Siegfried, who coached the Shock to the arenafootball2 league title in 2006, Spokane's first year in the league, returns to Spokane on Saturday as Jacksonville's offensive coordinator.
World Cup hero Chastain to play in Spokane on Sunday
SPOKANE - Brandi Chastain, she of the 1999 World Cup-winning penalty kick and subsequent shirt removal, is scheduled to play in Spokane on Sunday when the California Storm visit the Spokane Black Widows on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Joe Albi Stadium.
Chastain will be available for autographs and pictures, the Spokane team said.
O'Hara named to NWAACC Northern Region all-star team
Erin O'Hara, a sophomore at Shoreline (Wash.) Community College and a 2008 graduate of Lakeland High, was recently named to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges all-star first team in softball as a utility player.
O'Hara helped Shoreline finish with a 26-11 record.
O'Hara was also named to the NWAACC all-academic team, as was Katie Bologna of Community Colleges of Spokane, who played at Coeur d'Alene High.
Post Falls' Power joins Chiefs' prospect list
Adam Power, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound forward from Post Falls, was recently added to the 50-player protected list of the Spokane Chiefs.
Power, 15, played part of last season in Boise with the Bantam AA Junior Steelheads, amassing 21 goals and eight assists with 52 penalty minutes in 30 games. He is set to attend and play at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Saskatchewan in the fall.
Signup under way for adult tennis classes
COEUR d'ALENE - Registration for adult tennis classes through the Coeur d'Alene Recreation Department will run from June 1-11 at the rec department at 710 Mullan Avenue.
The first session starts June 15 and runs for four weeks, with classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
A second session will start July 12.
Cost for eight lessons is $35.
Classes will be held at the Cherry Hill Park tennis courts on 15th Street.
Students must supply their own tennis racquet and a can of tennis balls.
