Gomez wins; Curtis surprises

BOISE — Led by Kinsey Gomez and Cody Curtis, Coeur d’Alene swept the boys and girls long distance races Friday in the state 5A track meet at Bronco Stadium, while Timberlake’s Sam Simmons and Kootenai’s Gina Palmiter took first in the girls pole vault for 3A and 1A, respectively.

Curtis, a sophomore, pulled a shocking upset in the 1,600-meter run, as he didn’t expect to beat defending state champ Eric Fitzpatrick of Boise. Curtis won in 4 minutes, 21.85 seconds. Fitzpatrick finished in 4:22.55.

“I really surprised myself,” said Curtis, who struggled this season with illness and missed a week after being diagnosed with a type of asthma. “I didn’t think I could run well enough to beat the high caliber of runners from around here.”

While Curtis confessed he didn’t expect to win, that didn’t stop him from trying. He employed a new strategy with great success.

“Last year, I went out fast and led on the first lap,” said Curtis, who finished second as a freshman. “I really felt like that cost me a shot at winning the race. But this year those changes worked out.”

Gomez, who won the 3,200 on Thursday, dominated the field for the second straight night, winning the 1,600 by more than 10 seconds. Despite failing to break the 5-minute barrier, Gomez’s time of 5:02.67 was her personal best.

“I wanted to break 5 minutes tonight, but I was happy with my time,” Gomez said. “But that’s the next goal — to break five minutes.”

Running the race with such success despite unseasonably cool temperatures in the 50s was important to Gomez.

“I like running in warm weather, but I don’t mind the cooler weather either,” Gomez said. “I want to be known as a runner who can perform well in all conditions, not just one particular temperature. And I felt like I proved that with this race.”

Coeur d’Alene’s boys team tallied 55.5 points to finish second behind Eagle’s 81.

The Post Falls girls finished third with 62 points behind runaway winner Eagle with 115 points and Mountain View with 77. Coeur d’Alene finished fifth with 50.5 points.

Also with something to prove in the 800 was Coeur d’Alene’s David Norris. After running the anchor leg of the 4x800-meter relay and finishing one second behind Vallivue, Norris posted a time of 1:55.26 to win the event.

Palmiter wrapped up her career by winning that elusive state title, clearing a height of 8 feet, 6 inches.

“This wasn’t my best height, but winning state has been my goal for the past three seasons,” Palmiter said. “So, it was great to pull all together enough today to win it.”

For Palmiter, competing in the pole vault was just another way to go against the flow of the crowd.

“I don’t like doing what everyone else is — and nobody really does the pole vault,” Palmiter said. “So, I thought it looked cool and wanted to give it a try — and I just loved it.”

Only a sophomore, Simmons won just the second individual state title for the Timberlake girls, clearing a height of 10-6.

“I just wanted to go out and do my best today and see what happened,” Simmons said. “But winning the state title is really cool, too.”

Simmons might have a few more in her future as she follows in the footsteps of her father, who was an Idaho State pole vaulter and cleared a height of 16-2.

In the 5A boys, other medalists included Coeur d’Alene’s Steven Casley (fourth in the 400 dash), Deon Watson (fourth in the high jump), Alex Hendricks (sixth in the 800), and the 4x200-meter relay team (third); and Post Falls’ Jordan Pastras (second in the high jump). Medalists for Lake City included Zach Linscott (tie for second in high jump), Rachel Ward (second in 800), Josh Peters (fourth in 400) and Brittany Pope (sixth in high jump).

In the 5A girls, also medaling for Post Falls was Kacie Shields (fifth in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles), Kadie Booth (third in the 200 dash), Shaundra Scott (sixth in the 100, fifth in the 200), the 4x100-meter relay team (fourth) and 4x200-meter relay team (second in 1:44.73, .02 behind Eagle). Coeur d’Alene’s Dayna Drager medaled with a third place finish in the 400-meter dash.

Lakeland’s lone medalist of the day in the girls 4A meet was Latecia Howell, who placed sixth in the 100 in 12.99.

In 2A, Coeur d’Alene Charter’s medalists included Sabrina Ewing (third in long jump and second in the triple jump), Jacob Bowman (second in the long jump), Leo Francovich (third in the 3,200), Rory Ruskovich (fifth in the 3,200), and Daniel Pinkerton (sixth in the 3,200).

In 3A, medalists included Timberlake’s Travis Porter (third in the triple jump, second in high jump), Coltin Fulwiler (second in the pole vault), Andrew McLean (second in the discus), Lelia Riley (fourth in the discus), Ashly George (fourth in the 3,200) and Ryan Sacksteder (fourth in the 3,200).

Timberlake’s boys lead with 43 points. Payette is second with 37.3. Priest River’s girls are third, Timberlake fourth.

In 1A, medalists included Kootenai’s Jacob Zarpentine (fourth in the pole vault), Ana Parker (fifth in the shot put), and Ellison Schultz (sixth in the 3,200).

NOTE: Due to space constraints, 3A, 2A and 1A results will run in Sunday’s Press.
