A pair of students from Coeur d'Alene High School will head to the nation's capital in June to perform with the Music Educators National Conference National Honor Orchestra.

Nathan Barber, cello, and Kaylee Wood, string bass, sent in a recording in January to audition for the national honor. They were recently notified that they were two of the three Idahoans selected for the June 27 performance at the Kennedy Center.

The five-day trip includes tours and sightseeing, in addition to practices and performances. Both are fundraising to pay their expenses.

Kaylee, a sophomore, and Nathan, a junior, both started in the Coeur d'Alene School District strings program in fifth grade and have been playing and competing since. In addition to being in the CHS orchestra program directed by Jim Phillips, they have both qualified for All-Northwest and All-State music competitions. Both are also in the Spokane Youth Orchestra where they have performed solos. Nathan recently won a concerto competition in Spokane. Both are considering careers in music.

The Idaho District 1 Music Educators awarded Nathan and Kaylee each a $250 scholarship to help with expenses of their trip.

Kaylee is trying to raise additional trip funds by selling raffle tickets for a $100 gift card to Target. Tickets can be purchased from Kaylee or you may call the school at 667-4507.

Nathan is raising money by doing yard work. He can be reached for hire by calling 771-0351.

Kaylee is the daughter of Canfield Middle School music teacher Doug Wood and his wife, Kristin. Nathan is the son of Paul and Leslie Barber.
