Vikings march into semifinals

| May 21, 2010 9:00 PM

BOISE — Devon Austin went 3 for 3 and drove in the first three runs as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings beat the Capital Eagles 5-3 in the first round of the state 5A baseball tournament Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.

Drew Turbin drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning for Coeur d’Alene (22-9), hitting a one-out triple to right center field to score Matt Lambert, who had walked, to break a 3-all tie. Turbin scored on Colin Comack’s sacrifice fly.

“That was a big-time win for us,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Rook said. “It was a quality baseball game. Comack battled, (Jake) Pereira threw well, and we got a couple of timely knocks by a couple of guys.”

Austin singled in a run in the first inning. In the third, Lambert and Turbin walked, moved up on a sacrifice, and scored on a two-run double by Austin to put Coeur d’Alene ahead 3-1.

Capital (15-13), which beat the Vikings last year in the first round en route to the state title, tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth.

In the second inning Pereira, playing third base, charged in on a squeeze bunt and made a diving throw to Austin at home to record the out.

Coeur d’Alene, which posted its first victory at state since 2001, plays Centennial (19-9) tonight at 6:15 PDT in a semifinal game.
