Gomez, Bauman triumph

BOISE — Coeur d’Alene High junior Kinsey Gomez and Post Falls senior Rebecca Bauman both overcame disappointments from a year ago to win individual titles in the state 5A girls track and field meet Thursday evening at Bronco Stadium.

Gomez, who last year stumbled off the track on the final lap after being among a trio of leaders and later blacked out due to low hemoglobin levels, obliterated the field. Gomez finished with a time of 11 minutes, 2.04 seconds, more than 19 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Eagle senior Liz Brandon, who set the state record last year.

“I really felt good tonight,” Gomez said. “My goal was to conserve energy for as long as I could and see how I felt when it was time to make a move.”

When Gomez hit the home stretch, she led Brandon by about 150 meters.

“I used to look at track as a way to stay in shape for cross country,” said Gomez, who now has a state track title to go along with her cross country title. “But now I really appreciate track. It takes a lot to be so mentally focused in races like these.”

After the first day of competition, Coeur d’Alene’s girls team is tied for first with Eagle with 33 points, and Post Falls is third with 27. On the boys’ side, Coeur d’Alene is tied for fourth with Caldwell with 19 points, and Post Falls is sixth with 15.

For Bauman, the disappointment of watching a second-place finish in the shot put slip away — and placing second in the discus after entering the state meet with the longest distance — was too much. Bauman admitted that night was a sleepless one. She vowed to not let it happen again.

Bauman washed away a year of disappointment by winning the state title in the discus throw with a throw of 138 feet, 5 inches.

“I’m so happy I got to go out like this,” said Bauman, who also finished second in the shot put with a distance of 38-1 3/4. “Last year, I felt like I was competing for all my friends and family — and when I didn’t win, I was disappointed that I let them down. But this year, I decided just to have fun and do my best for myself and see what happens.”

With a highly competitive nature, Bauman found it difficult to lay aside her dream of finally winning a state title. But she recognized that change in approach was the difference in getting prepared mentality.

“When you want something so badly, you can think about it and analyze it so much that you forget why you’re doing what you’re doing,” Bauman said. “I think this experience between last year and this year helped me find myself and what I need to have a competitive edge.”

Coeur d’Alene senior Shae Carson experienced a reversal of fortune with Bauman from a year ago. Last year, Carson claimed first after entering state with the second-best distance behind Bauman. This year, the roles — and results — were flipped. Carson placed second with a distance of 135-2.

In the shot put, Coeur d’Alene’s Justine Zap placed third behind Bauman with a throw of 37-9 1/2, while Carson was fourth with a distance of 37-4. Katie Moden of Borah won with a throw of 38-5 3/4.

Post Falls junior Matt Wardell medaled with third-place finishes in both the shot put and discus, and Trojan senior Jalana White took fourth in the triple jump.

The Coeur d’Alene boys 4x800-meter relay team of David Norris, Cody Curtis, Alex Hendricks and Jake Stadley set a school record in a thrilling finish that saw the Vikings finish second with a time of 8:01.83, just over a second behind first-place finisher Vallivue.

Coeur d’Alene stayed within striking distance heading into Norris’ anchor leg. Norris quickly closed the gap and drew even with Vallivue’s anchor with about 60 meters remaining. Then the Vallivue runner pulled away.

“When I started the final leg, I started to make up a lot of ground fast,” Norris said. “I just thought, ‘Why not go for it?’ So I just kept pushing myself. But I ran out of gas. I wanted my wheels to fall off after the race, but it happened just a few yards short of the finish line.”

Later in the evening, Curtis and Norris received medals for their third- and sixth-place finishes, respectively, in the 3,200.
