Thursday-Saturday

At Memorial Stadium, Boise

Defending champion: Capital

Notes: Coeur d’Alene qualified last year for the first time since 2001, going two and out. Many of those players are back this year. The Vikings open against Capital of Boise, which beat Coeur d’Alene in last year’s first round, and went on to win the state title. “We’re looking forward to getting down there and facing Capital,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Rook said. “These guys are trying to get Cd’A back on top. We’re all excited for season three.”

Lewiston, the Region 1 champion, was fourth at state last year.

At Rodeo Park, Nampa

Defending champion: Minico

Notes: After playing single games every day for five straight days last week en route to the Region 1 title, Lakeland at least got a few days for its pitchers’ arms to rest before starting state play today at 9 a.m. PDT vs. defending state champion Minico. At state, Hawks coach Jason Bradbury figures he can divvy up the pitching duties between six players — seniors Justin Richardson and Kostas Garcia, and juniors Cody Vandever, Daniel Mobeck, Gaige Gray and Daniel Whitesitt. ... Three players are still on the roster from the Lakeland squad which placed fourth two years ago at Rodeo Park in its last trip to state. One of those, senior Caleb Guerber, is batting .510. Another, Kurt South, leads in home runs (3) and RBIs (20). Daniel Mobeck is batting .404. ... “I used just about every arm possible last week,” Bradbury said. “We are swinging the bats well. And our defense, in those seven games (in seven days last week), we only had four total errors. I think we’re peaking at the right time.”
