Pub on 5th offers conversation areas

The former conference room on the back of Scratch Restaurant has been converted into downtown Coeur d'Alene's latest spot for beer, wine, food and conversation.

Pub on 5th offers seating for 30 on banks of leather sofas with tables, or on benches with tables near the window seating on Fifth Street.

"We have the full (Scratch) menu, and some pub menu items," said Nikolai Castoro, who tends the bar and serves food during the early shift. Bottled beers and wines are also available.

There is also a flat-screen TV for sports programs.

The entrance is on Fifth Street behind Scratch at 501 Sherman Ave. Hours are 11 a.m. to closing time, which is around 10 p.m.

Fred Meyer launches digital coupon program

A first among Pacific Northwest grocery retailers, Fred Meyer is now offering its customers access to a unique digital coupon system that eliminates clipping or printing out individual manufacturer coupons. Customers can now go to the Fred Meyer website, select coupons and upload them to their Rewards Card.

"This is such a great time-saver for our customers," said Melinda Merrill, public affairs director for Fred Meyer Stores. "There is no other place for shoppers to get all these coupons from major brand names in one location."

One of the distinguishing features of the new program is that all the manufacturer coupons are located in one convenient page on the website, as opposed to searching for coupons on multiple websites or printed ads. Another distinguishing aspect is ease of use. Customers do not need to provide printed coupons to the cashier; instead they will automatically be deducted from the Rewards Card once the item is purchased and the customer's card is scanned at the register.

To load the coupons onto the Rewards Card, customers need to sign in at www.fredmeyer.com/digitalcoupons. Customers must have an online account and have their Rewards Card number associated with that account to be able to load coupons to their cards. The digital coupons can be easily sorted through on the website by popularity, expiration and value, and if needed, customers can also print out the entire list of coupons they have loaded to their card. New coupons are always being added and changed, so customers are encouraged to go online and check regularly for new deals.

Additionally, the new digital coupon program supports Fred Meyer's many sustainability initiatives and ongoing goal of eliminating waste and conserving energy by reducing the amount of paper used in the production of printed coupons.

Paper tax returns going away

Retailers and others who routinely file their Idaho sales and use tax returns electronically will no longer receive paper returns from the Idaho Tax Commission.

Businesses that have e-filed their Idaho sales and use or sales-related tax returns for at least six consecutive months (or two consecutive quarters), won't receive paper returns in the mail.

To help them remember when to e-file, they can get a schedule of 2010 filing due dates in the "Quick Picks" section of the Tax Commission website at tax.idaho.gov.

"This change will save the state more than $22,000 a year in mailing and printing costs," said Dan John, tax policy supervisor. "It will also reduce the amount of paper we use."

For more information, call the Tax Commission at 334-7660 in the Boise area or (800) 972-7660 toll free.
