Kellogg freshman Pouttu wins 3A girls medalist title

| May 19, 2010 9:00 PM

POST FALLS — Prior to the state 3A girls golf tournament, Kellogg High freshman Kaceelyn Pouttu was told by quite a few people they thought she could win the tournament.

“But I just kinda shrugged it off because I didn’t want to get big-headed,” she said.

After Monday and Tuesday’s rounds, they were proven right.

Pouttu shot 79 each day for a 158, winning girls medalist honors by nine strokes at The Links Golf Club.

“After the first round (in which she led by two strokes), I just wanted to play my own game again and shoot in the 70s again,” Pouttu said. “I played OK ... decent ... it could have been better.”

Kellogg coach Simon Miller noted Pouttu was tournament-tested already, on the Idaho and Washington junior golf circuits. Twice she’s won her age group in Idaho state junior golf tournaments.

“Since she’s been old enough to walk, she’s been playing in tournaments, Miller said. “So it’s not an uncomfortable feeling for her. She was right in her element as a freshman.”

Kellogg’s girls brought home a trophy, finishing fourth with an 838. Shelley, which moves up to 4A next year, won by 39 strokes with a 755.

Marsh Valley shot 639 to win by 21 strokes. Will Higham of Shelley was medalist, beating Tanner Hunsaker of Marsh Valley on the first playoff hole.
