FUNDRAISER: For White Cane Week

The Post Falls Lions Club would like to thank the Post Falls community for their generous giving this past Saturday (May 1) in their annual White Cane fundraiser.

The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), a leading organization for the blind, has established the third week in May as "White Cane Week." During this week, a special concentration of efforts to educate the public concerning the hopes and aspirations of the blind is emphasized. In keeping with the Lions' established tradition of assisting the blind, your Lions club can do much to promote community awareness of the white cane law by seeing that all driver education manuals prominently include the law. Request that local radio, TV and newspaper media periodically feature news of the law's existence and its wording in detail.

Blind and visually impaired people in many countries use the familiar white cane with a red band at the bottom. Lions help increase awareness of this "symbol of independence" - and the laws governing its use - during international white cane events.

Monies collected are used to support programs and services for people who are blind or visually impaired as well as for sight conservation. As volunteers, Lions enjoy working together to target needs in their communities. The Lions decide which projects suit these needs and when and how they are best able to address them.

Cd'A: Moved here because of people

When we moved to Coeur d'Alene in 2003 - we thought it was for the clean air and water.

Last month our home burned to the ground (you had it on your front page).

And we realized we moved here because of the people! How supportive, kind and gracious you all are.

We would like to extend our thanks to the Harrison Volunteer Fire Department, the Carlin Bay residents, manager and staff of the Best Western Appleway, Mulligans, the Red Robin at Riverstone, our insurance people "Wade," our real estate adviser Ken and to strangers who said "we are just paying it forward."

God bless you all.
