NIC Sentinel brings home awards

The North Idaho College Sentinel student newspaper recently won three national first-place awards in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence national competition.

The Sentinel won the award for the Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper in the two-year college category. Other finalists includes the Aztec Press of Pima Community College in Arizona and The College Voice of Mercer County Community College in New Jersey.

In addition, Sentinel staff member Loren Kelly from Coeur d'Alene won a first place award for general column writing and Kalyn Lovlyn from Coeur d'Alene topped the sports column writing category.

Jake Donahue from Portland, Ore., was a finalist in the breaking news reporting category for his piece on parking.

Eli Francovich from Post Falls was a finalist in the feature writing category for his piece "Hooked on Hookah."

The awards will be presented at the national convention Oct. 4 in Las Vegas.
