Basketball

Mike Woodson was let go as coach of the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, just four days after the team was swept in the second round of the playoffs by the Orlando Magic.

General manager Rick Sund, after consulting with the ownership group, decided not to offer Woodson a new contract. So ended a six-year coaching tenure in which the Hawks won just 13 games in his first season, then improved their record every year since — including three straight playoff appearances.

Soccer

The United States proposed holding the World Cup draw in Miami ahead of a tournament in 2018 or 2022 and suggested the possibility of hosting the opener at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

The five-volume U.S. bid book, presented to FIFA, would put the qualifying draw in New York, its location ahead of the 1994 tournament.

Giants 8, Astros 2: Todd Wellemeyer pitched into the eighth inning, leading host San Francisco past Houston.

Dodgers 4, Padres 3: Matt Kemp hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, leading Los Angeles at San Diego.

Phillies 9, Brewers 5: Ryan Howard’s two-run homer in the first sparked Philadelphia at Milwaukee.

Braves 6, Diamondbacks 5: Martin Prado’s two-run single in the ninth lifted Atlanta past visiting Arizona.

Cardinals 4, Reds 3: Albert Pujols and Ryan Ludwick homered, leading St. Louis at Cincinnati.

Washington at Colorado, ppd., rain: The Nationals-Rockies game was postponed by a steady rain falling in Denver.

The contest will be made up in a day-night doubleheader today.

Rain washed out the second round of the Texas Open at San Antonio, and PGA officials said more bad weather this weekend could push the tournament into Monday.

Se Ri Pak shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Brittany Lincicome and Wendy Ward in the Bell Micro LPGA Classic at Mobile, Ala.
