U.S. missile strike kills 10 in Pakistan
PARACHINAR, Pakistan (AP) - Several suspected U.S. missiles destroyed two vehicles and makeshift homes in a tribal region near Afghanistan early today, killing at least 10 people and wounding four, two intelligence officials said.
The attack happened in the Doga area of North Waziristan, but the identities of the people killed in the attack were not immediately known, said the officials.
North Waziristan has been the target of nearly all of about 30 other American attacks this year. In recent months, it has become a new haven for militants who fled a Pakistani army offensive in their previous stronghold, neighboring South Waziristan.
Protesters blast Haiti president's quake response
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) - Police fired tear gas outside the ruins of Haiti's national palace Monday to control 2,000 demonstrators calling for President Rene Preval's resignation in the largest political protest since the Jan. 12 earthquake.
Many demonstrators identified themselves as supporters of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who was exiled to Africa aboard a U.S. plane during a 2004 rebellion. Protesters marched to the national mall following speaker trucks that trumpeted calls for Aristide's return.
