USDA - Forest Service Idaho Panhandle National Forests Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District Kootenai and Shoshone Counties, Idaho Forest Supervisor Ranotta McNair has announced her decision to implement activities in an area of the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District identified for purposes of this analysis as the Rolling Hills Larch Resource Area. Under the decision, timber management activities will occur on a total of 231 acres near Shoshone Base Camp, primarily within the Shoshone and Lost Creek drainages (T50N, R4E, sections 3, 4, 5, 8, and 9, and T51N, R4E, sections 21, 22, 27, 28, 29, 32, 33, and 34, B.M.). Activities will include at total of 216 acres of commercial thinning, 15 acres right-of-way clearing, 50 acres prescribed burning (without commercial harvest), and 50 acres supplemental grapple piling fuels treatment within or adjacent to the Wildland Urban Interface. The project will require 3.9 miles of permanent road construction and 0.3 miles of temporary road construction. The permanent roads will be waterbarred, seeded, and have front-end obliterations after use to place these roads into a storage status. The temporary road will be recontoured after use. The project will also decommission 4.8 miles of road no longer needed for future transportation access. The Selected Action is expected to generate approximately 4,970 ccf (2.5 million board feet) of merchantable timber products. The decision will also allow for the implementation of several opportunities within the resource area that were analyzed with this proposal, including rehabilitation of unauthorized ATV routes in the Lost Creek area; additional grapple pile and burning treatments within proposed harvest units; precommercial thinning of past regeneration harvests; culvert upgrades on Roads 412 and 442; and a commercial firewood offering.
