Dolores Margaret (Handlin) Henning, 76

| May 11, 2010 5:46 AM

Dolores passed

away peacefully from heart failure, at home with family and pets at

her side, on May 8, 2010, having won an 18-year battle with three

separate bouts of cancer.

Dolores was born

June 16, 1933, in Chicago, Ill., to Charlotte and Emmet Handlin,

and was the beloved stepdaughter of Milton Carlson. She spent her

school years both in the city of Chicago, and in the country in

Norwood Park, graduating from Austin High School in 1951. Shortly

after graduation she married Glenn Kindman Henning, also of

Chicago. They were married for 33 years, making a home primarily in

Country Club Hills, Ill.

Dolores is

survived by her four children, Judy (Michael) Groat, Glenn Jr.

(Tammy), Tom (Peggy) and Stacey. She also dearly loved her nine

grandchildren, Andrea, Jeff, Kevin, Lisa, Brian, Lauren, Laura,

Leanne and Chris, and three great-grandchildren, Tommy, Tara and

John.

Dolores is best

remembered and respected for an unwavering faith in her God, and

her tremendous concern and compassion for those less fortunate.

That depthless compassion extended to all of God’s creatures, great

and small. There wasn’t a living creature in need that Dolores

would not attend to, having taken in countless strays or abandoned

animals into her home that needed care. She loved and was forever

surrounded by her animals — and they loved her in return.

Although Dolores

was employed at times (later in life she earned her degree in

business management), she loved and was most proud of being a

traditional homemaker and mom. Her children, all college graduates,

will forever remember her saying that “the back of a report card

(which attested to a person’s character traits) is more important

than the front.”

Dolores moved to

Coeur d’Alene in 1999, to be with her two daughters. She loved the

Northwest and, as was her wishes, will have her ashes returned to

the earth there for eternity.

A celebration of

life will be held at a later date.

Gifts or

remembrances in honor of Dolores are to be made to the Kootenai

Humane Society or other organizations dedicated to the cause of

serving animals in need.
