Lake City High School returned from the Heritage Music Festival in Seattle last weekend with an accumulation of awards that earned them the coveted Overall Festival Sweepstakes and Instrumental Sweepstakes trophies.

About 15 schools competed, coming from California, the Northwest and Alberta, Canada.

The Lake City orchestra and jazz band each won Best in Festival in their category. Lake City Stomp won Best in Festival for Instrumental. The symphonic band earned the Festival of Gold Invitation. The jazz band and Stomp received the Adjudicator's Choice award.

Lake City High students also brought home two of the four Maestro Awards given at the Festival. One went to the jazz band's lead saxophonist Kyle Moreen for his outstanding solo.

The other went to a choir trio composed of Carly Farrell, Jansen Butler and Cassidy Ball. That Maestro Award was the first trophy received by an LCHS choir at Heritage Festival.

In the overall ratings, the symphonic band and jazz band each received Gold honors, the orchestra, treble choir and chamber choirs earned Silver awards and the jazz choir earned a Bronze award.

Lake City has attended the festival five times since 2002. The bands and orchestra are under the direction of Tim Sandford. The choral program is directed by Joel Sandford.
