GYMNASTICS
Averna shines: Chelsea Averna, 15, of Coeur d'Alene, finished fourth on uneven bars at the USA Gymnastics Level 9 Western Championships last weekend in Des Moines, Iowa.
Averna competes for the Inland Empire Gymnastics Association's Team Avant Coeur.
Her score of 9.025 was only .3 from the gold medal.
"Chelsea has been our most consistent performer on bars all season," said Lisa Adlard, head coach of Team Avant Coeur. "Despite this being her first trip to nationals, she handled the pressure great."
Chelsea also finished 18th on vault and 20th on floor.
This will be Averna's last meet as a level 9, as she will now move to level 10, the highest level of Junior Olympic competition starting next season.
The level 10 national championships are this weekend in Dallas. Avant Coeur's Erin Stone will be competing as part of the regional team.
AAU BASKETBALL
Thunder wins: The North Idaho Elite Thunder eighth-grade girls won the Inland Empire AAU Championship in Spokane.
They beat the Thai Bamboo Rimrockets 55-43 in the championship game. Hailey Little had 17 points with a 13-for-14 free throw effort to lead the Thunder. Hailey Jackson hit three 3-point shots and finished with 11 points. Sydni Williams and Sydney Parker each had eight points and Madison Sumner pulled down eight rebounds.
In the first game the Thunder defeated the Cougars 48-18. Breanna Kinson led the Thunder with 14 points and eight rebounds. Sydney Williams followed with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Natalie Wheelock added five rebounds, three steals and three assists.
The Thunder came from behind to beat the Boise Hoop Dreams 47-42. Sydney Williams scored 11 points, Hailey Jackson had nine points, Sara Chalich had seven points, five steals and three assists, and Sydni Parker had eight points and five boards.
The Thunder beat the Jordanettes 37-36 in overtime. Sydney Parker had 11 points and three steals, Hailey Little and Sydney Williams each had seven points and six boards and Madison Sumner had five rebounds and four points.
In the semifinals, the Thunder beat the North Idaho Storm 42-8. Sydney Williams had 13 points, Sara Chalich and Hailey Little eight points each and Sydney Parker had 11 boards, eight steals and six points.
The Thunder's next tournament is the Best of the West in Yakima.

Idaho Thunder under-10 boys (Sanchez/Gelnette) White: The Thunder is now 6-0. They started by winning a doubleheader at home on April 10 against Pullman Mell (8-6) and Pullman Scudiero (7-1). On April 17, they defeated Spokane Shadow Pele 6-0. On April 24, they beat Spokane Valley Youth Shell 7-0 and Spokane Shadow Zidane 7-2.
Providing goals this season have been Nick Morris, Chase Cripps, Braeden Gelnette, Kyle Sanchez, Zack Nall and Braden Vaughn. Pitching in at goalie for the shutouts have been Kyle Sanchez and Zack Nall, Aaron Oliphant and Blane Badger.
The Thunder White beat the Coeur d'Alene Sting (Nazemi) last weekend 6-1. Chase Cripps ended up with a hat trick for the winners. Braeden Gelnette had a pair of goals and an assist for the Thunder. Nick Morris had two assists and a goal to complete the scoring. The win put the Thunder White team in first place in the Northwest League with a record of 6 -0.
Thunder U10 boys Purple (Butterfield/Sanchez): The Thunder is 1-4, beating Pullman Mell 5-3 and losing against Pullman Scudiero 2-1 on April 10.
On April 17, they lost to Spokane Shadow Pele 4-1. On April 24 they lost a doubleheader to Spokane Valley Youth Shell and Spokane Shadow Zidane. Braden Claflield, Harley Olinger, Peter Gobin, and JR Rayborn have scored goals this season for Team Purple.
Coeur d'Alene Sting '96 girls: The Sting is leading the District 6 Inter-Association League with a record of 5-2. The team of 13-year-old girls is playing up in the under-14 division of the league and has outscored opponents 15-8 thus far.
On May 1, the Sting defeated Three Rivers SC 2-1, with Natalie Wheelock scoring both goals. The Sting lost on May 2 2-1 to the Spokane Sabers. Megan Lambert scored the Sting's goal on a penalty kick in the first half.
Sting U12 boys: The Sting defeated the Spokane Breakers 5-2 last Saturday at the South Complex in Spokane. Pete Rau scored twice, with single goals by Garrett Flolo, Konar Skindlov and Taylor Petkovitch. The Sting is now 5-1 loss in District 6 League play this spring.
Sting U10 boys (Patton): The Sting lost 4-1 to the Sandpoint Strkers (Reichold) in league play. The Sting's lone goal was scored by Spencer Messina, assisted by Shawn McKeeken.
Sting U11 boys (Ruchti): The Sting beat PVSC United from Pocatello 2-1 in the championship game of the BCSC Performance Cup in Boise.
The Sting won its first game 7-0 over Les Bois (Samba). Goals were scored by Travis Swallow (4), Braden Lanphere, Porter Hall and Cole Fawcett, with assists from Cole Fawcett, Braden Lanphere and Justin Kofmehl.
The next game, against BCSC ADU, ended in a 1-1 tie, with a goal by Travis Swallow, assisted by Braden Lanphere.
The Sting beat BNSC (Juventus) 3-1 as Joey Naccarato scored three goals to send the Sting to the finals.
In the championship game, Travis Swallow and Joey Naccarato scored for the Sting to beat PVSC from Pocatello.
Locals shine: Students of Goshin-jitsu Chow-Hoon Martial Arts School in Hayden, under head instructor Bijay Singh, competed at the recent Seattle Dojo judo tournament in Bellevue, Wash.
Deklin Boseth placed second in the Boys 8 Lightweight Division; Odin Boseth placed second in the Boys 10 Years Lightweight Division; Elizabeth Ryssel placed third in the Girls 10 Years Medium Weight Division; Brenden Larsen placed second in the 11-12 Years Medium Weight Division; and Raji Singh placed third in the Girls 8 Years Lightweight Division.

Baseball, softball signups: Registration for youth baseball and slowpitch softball for boys and girls ages 5-13 is running through May 14.
Games are held Monday through Thursday evenings. Practices begin the week of June 14, games begin the week of June 28.
Registration is at the Coeur d'Alene City Hall, 710 Mullan Avenue, on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Registration fee is $11 for city residents and $22 for non-city residents.
