TRIBE: Pact should be honored

| May 5, 2010 10:00 PM

It is disappointing and hard to believe that the WHITE MAN has learned nothing about integrity and keeping his word after giving it.

After a meeting between Benewah County Commissioner Jack Buell, Sheriff Robert Kirst and Prosecuting Attorney Doug Payne and the Tribal Council for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and Chief Allan, an agreement was made between the parties (CdA Press front page 4/22/10). It really doesn’t matter what the agreement was about. What does matter is that an agreement was reached.

Benewah County officials then changed the document, violating the terms of the agreement. The tribe believed all that was needed was for the necessary parties to sign. It was a done deal and it came back radically changed, going back on what was already agreed upon.

We were so ashamed of this type of behavior that when we broke so many treaties with the Indians, we made restitution. It seems some white men still have trouble with integrity or a valid handshake.

A disappointed White Woman,
