ACADEMIES: Kryger got 4 appointments

| June 20, 2010 10:00 PM

Just read the letter to the editor about former CDA students who were appointed to military academies. My husband Gene Kryger was the first, we believe, in the state of Idaho to be appointed to four military academies. He was a 1957 IHM Academy graduate and was appointed by Senator Henry Dworshak to the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Navy Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marines and Westpoint.

IHM Academy was the Catholic school in CDA that closed around 1971.  Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy was the full name but everyone just called it IHM or the Academy. It started around the turn of the century and the original buildings were from Ft. Sherman. I believe they moved the hospital for their school building and the opera house was moved to house the nuns.  It was right across the street from St. Thomas.  They built a new school after Gene graduated in 1957 and it closed about 1971.
