FLAG: Please, fly her right

| June 4, 2010 10:00 PM

I am impressed and disappointed. As I drove to work this Memorial Day to replace our flag and place it at half-staff, I noticed the number of flags that have been replaced with new gleaming ones… I am impressed.

I also noticed how many of them are flying at the top of the pole in contradiction to a Presidential order… I am disappointed.

Over the past several years, I have paid close attention to how Americans and businesses in our community display their pride in our country by flying our national ensign. I applaud their dedication, but if they are going to fly her, let’s fly her right.

I don’t think many Americans are aware that when, where and how our national flag is flown is governed by United States Code Title 36 Chapter 10 Sections 173 to 178.  Every flag owner should review this code and fly our national symbol appropriately. Usflag.org does a great job of presenting the details. Half-staff proclamations can be found on the web site for the Office of the President of the United States.

Of special concern, review the statues related to proper display, flying at half staff, and proper disposal of an old worn, faded, or otherwise non-serviceable flag. Most local veterans and service orginizations will do this properly for you.

I ask that all good Americans who wish to proudly display the symbol of our nation’s freedom take the time to review the code and “Fly Her Right.”
