POST FALLS - Caruso's Sandwich Co. was burglarized late Wednesday and the suspect busted the cash register to steal a small amount of cash.

Mike Freeman, who runs the business with his wife, Desi, said the suspect threw a rock through the side patio door to enter the business at 402 E. Seltice Way around 10:30 p.m.

A male suspect wearing a hooded sweatshirt immediately went over the counter and smashed the cash register.

"He threw it on the floor several times," Post Falls Police Lt. Greg McLean said.

No other items were stolen or damaged.

The suspect then exited the building through an office window in the back part of the building and ran up a small embankment before police arrived.

"He ran right by a computer, so he wasn't interested in electronics," Freeman said.

Police and Freeman estimate the suspect was at the business about five minutes based on surveillance video.

"It doesn't appear he's worked here based on his behavior, but he may have eaten here before," Freeman said.

Freeman said in the five years he and his wife have run the business they've never had a break-in.

"I was really angry at first, then it was sad to think about it," he said. "I was raised here and I hope this doesn't become a town that everybody talks about."
