Priano helps keep Lums alive at state

| July 30, 2010 9:00 PM

BOISE - Derek Priano pitched 8 1/3 innings, and the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen remained alive in the state AA American Legion baseball tournament with a 12-7 victory over the Vallivue Titans on Friday at Timberline Park.

Priano had all three of his strikeouts in the first two innings, and threw just 92 pitches through eight innings. He got through the first two innings in 15 pitches, and had one four-pitch inning.

"He was so efficient," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. "He had them off-balance all day."

Joe Roletto hit a two-run home run in the second inning for Coeur d'Alene (22-28), which never trailed. Alex Krapas hit a three-run double to highlight a five-run eighth.

Coeur d'Alene plays the Pocatello Runnin' Rebels (33-13) today at 9 a.m. PDT in a loser-out game. If the Lums win, they play either Lewis-Clark or the Twin Falls Cowboys at 3 p.m.

"The goal was to come down and play well and win one ... they're kind of excited to see how far they can go," Duman said.

Late Wednesday, a groundout with the bases loaded in the ninth ended Coeur d'Alene's last threat at the Lums fell to the Boise Gems 17-14 in a first-round game. Grant Curtis and Chad Nyquist homered for the Lums.
