POST FALLS - For the first inning on Sunday, nearly everything went according to plan for the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen.

After the second inning, the Lumbermen had dug themselves a hole they couldn't dig out of as the Lewis-Clark Twins scored eight runs in the inning on the way to an 18-6 win in the Area A (district) championship game to clinch the top seed to the state tournament starting on Wednesday at Timberline High in Boise.

"It's tough when you play the best team in the state seven times in league," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. "We came out and it came down to our pitching again. The first inning went well, but we had a little hiccup in the second and it took us out of the game."

Both teams had already earned berths to state, which begins Wednesday at Timberline High in Boise.

Coeur d'Alene (21-27) opens state against the Boise Gems at 6:30 p.m. PDT.

Lewis-Clark (34-8) opens at 9 a.m. PDT against the No. 3 team from Area B.

Coeur d'Alene pitcher Jordan Anderson sent the Lewis-Clark lineup down in order in the first, but ran into trouble in the second inning after walking in two Twins runs.

Tanner Hollingsworth hit a three-run triple in the left field gap in the inning, and finished 4 for 6 with four RBIs for Lewis-Clark.

"I don't know, things just started clicking today," Hollingsworth said. "I was just trying to get on base so those good guys behind me could drive me in."

Of winning the top seed, Lewis-Clark coach Tom Grunenfelder said it's just a number and the work begins now toward a state title.

"It doesn't really matter to us," Grunenfelder said. "It's nice to win districts and get a trophy, but our goal is winning the state tournament. That's what it's about."

Mitch Bevacqua, Pete Hoffman and Joe Roletto had three hits apiece for Coeur d'Alene.

Bevacqua moved from second to third in the lineup after collecting four hits in Saturday's late game against Prairie.

"I like it," Bevacqua said. "It gives me a good chance to help bring in some runs."

Johnny Rake hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning for Lewis-Clark, who won its 17th straight game.
