Sandpoint puts local artists on display

| July 23, 2010 9:00 PM

How do you find local artists who live and work in nature and whose work reflects the beauty and harmony of these spectacular mountains? We know they are here, we see their creation from time to time, but where does this creation begin? Eight years ago, one of these artists decided to not only make an appearance, but to create an opportunity for other North Idaho artists to also share the intimate places they live and create. This was the start of the Artists Studio Tour of North Idaho where now more than 30 artists open their studios to the community and invite them to share in the experience.

You locate a map (at any local business or online at www.ArtTourDrive.org) and get an overview of the many offerings from jewelry, photography, painting and sculpture to metal, fiber, wood or glass creations. Select the studios you want to visit, plan your route and let the journey begin. Some of the studios are rather remote while others are in little hideaways in town, but select your favorites and venture into the realm of those whose outlet of creativity has become their living. The director of the Tour, Petja Scheele, a recent transplant from the Seattle area, says of the Tour, "I had no idea of the quality of artist that resided in these mountains. It's a crime to keep them hidden. I want Sandpoint to become known for their artists and artisans so that instead of going to the coast to buy art; those from the coast come here to seek out their art!"

If you are here for the summer music festival, or live here, or are just visiting for the weekend, don't miss this unique opportunity to unite with local artists, have the opportunity to purchase from them directly, sign up for a raffle at each studio and breathe in the energy of creation in classic form. Aug. 13-15 and 20-22 are the two weekends, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. all three days as well as open by appointment all summer. Nurture your own inner artist by taking in your favorite forms of creation!
