Scoping Notice USDA - FOREST SERVICE Idaho Panhandle National Forests Sandpoint Ranger District Bonner County, Idaho Schweitzer Fuels Reduction Project The Sandpoint Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests is proposing treatments to reduce forest fuel loading on National Forest System (NFS) lands in the Schweitzer Creek and Sand Creek areas. The project area is located approximately six miles north of Sandpoint, Bonner County, Idaho, in Township 58 North Range 2 West Sections 26, 27 and 34 (Boise Meridian). Proposed treatments include approximately 350 acres of timber harvest, including 118 acres of commercial thin/group select harvest, 82 acres of improvement cut, 139 acres of shelterwood harvest and 11 acres of pre-commercial thinning and/or pruning of lower branches to remove ladder fuels. Logging systems would consist of approximately 225 acres of skyline yarding and 114 acres of tractor yarding. Approximately 1.9 miles of temporary road would be constructed on NFS lands; the temporary roads would be decommissioned following completion of project activities. In addition, approximately 3.8 miles of road on other ownership lands would be reconstructed. Fuels treatment would include approximately 172 acres of excavator piling, 11 acres of hand piling, 30 acres of combined excavator piling/jackpot burning, and 136 acres of underburning. The Forest Service is beginning the process to develop an environmental assessment (EA) to determine how the proposal may affect different resources in the area.
