LEWISTON - Lewis-Clark State College baseball coach Ed Cheff, who led the Warriors to 16 NAIA World Series championships, is stepping down after 34 seasons as coach.

Cheff notified school officials he intends to retire effective Sept. 1.

Gary Picone, who also serves as athletic director at LCSC, will replace Cheff as head coach.

Pickleball lessons offered free next week

COEUR d'ALENE - Free pickleball lessons will be offered next Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. each night at Northshire Park on the corner of Atlas and Nezperce.

Equipment will be provided.

Pickleball is played on a 20-by-44-foot court, with either two players or four, with a large paddle and a Whiffle ball.

Shock place Vijil on IR; last 3 games now on NFL Network

SPOKANE - The Spokane Shock have placed wide receiver Raul Vijil on the injured reserve list, and added wide receiver Greg Orton to the roster.

Orton, who was in training camp with the Shock earlier this season, signed a free agent contract with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2009 out of Purdue. As a Boilermaker, Orton played in 50 games and recorded 203 receptions (fifth in school history) for 2,356 yards (sixth in school history) and 13 touchdowns.

Orton will eligible to play tonight, when the top-ranked Shock (9-2) host the Arizona Rattlers (8-3) at 8 p.m. at the Spokane Arena.

• The NFL Network will televise the Spokane game at Jacksonville on July 30 in the regular-season finale for both teams. The network originally was scheduled to show the game pitting Tulsa at Oklahoma City.

The league's contract with the network gives the network such flexibility in its broadcast schedule.

The Shock will now appear on the NFL Network three straight weeks. The network was already scheduled to show Spokane's game at Iowa on July 16 and the Shock's home game vs. Chicago on July 23.

All Shock games on the NFL Network are scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. PDT.
