NIC: Trustees aren't getting it
Mike Patrick’s editorial on June 30 entitled “For whom the Bell tolls” was wonderfully written and is right on the mark!
The NIC Trustees and President Bell continue to show a callous disregard for the economic realities impacting our state and those families who pay the taxes that support North Idaho College.
First they took a large slug of foregone taxes to support their questionable $10 million acquisition of the former mill site, and now they adopt a budget that again increases property taxes and give President Bell a boost in her already far too generous compensation package, and an extension on her employment contract. This at a time when local teachers and school districts are struggling with budget cuts and reduced compensation levels, and local families are straining to make ends meet. The Press had it exactly right when it stated that the current NIC Trustees have engendered an environment where there is “too much authority and too little accountability.” Their actions call into question whether they are acting as proper fiduciaries and fulfilling the responsibility of representing the public that elected them.
