Tame outfits win gold pin ice dance finals

NEW YORK - It was dress-down night for the ice dance finals at the Vancouver Olympics, in contrast to some folksy mishaps earlier in the week that included a Russian pair's criticized Aboriginal look and alarmingly long, full skirts.

Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir took gold Monday in simple white after wearing Spanish-inspired ruffles that reflected this year's theme of folk/country music. Other pairs went for the American West in cowboy hats and chaps.

Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin had toned down their controversial costumes for the weekend Aboriginal-themed routine, shedding their leaves for off-pink tulle and a Saturday Night Fever jumpsuit as they glided to bronze Monday.

Not everyone got the dress-down memo. Russian pair Jane Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski performed as a dancing duet of smoke and fire. Khokhlova's fire-engine red outfit was adorned with elaborate yellow flames. The chest piece of Novitski's all-black jumpsuit was similarly patterned with glittery whisps of black fabric.

Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White won silver - White in a ruffly, beige shirt and Davis in ruffles on top with a maroon skirt.
