Vikings build big first-day lead
POCATELLO - Coeur d'Alene put seven into the semifinals and leads the 5A team race by 21 points after the first day at the state wrestling tournament at Holt Arena.
Coeur d'Alene has 13 of 17 wrestlers in contention to place heading into today's final day.
"I thought it went real well," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. "We've got eight wrestlers on the top of the bracket and five in the wrestle-back. That last round was great because we went 5 for 5 to get into placing matches."
Kenny Staub (130), Braden Mowry (135), Christian Putman (145), Colin Comack (152), Jacob Norris (160), Johnny Peregrina (160) and Kevin Moore (171) each qualified for the semifinals for Coeur d'Alene.
"Everyone that competed for us today wrestled hard," Moffat said. "Kyle (Siegwarth) was ahead 12-4 before he got turned and pinned. That stuff happens down here. It's been real nip and tuck with Highland. I feel good about where we're at - but it's far from over."
Coeur d'Alene is bidding for its first state wrestling title.
Post Falls is third with 94 points and has six wrestlers still in contention for placing matches today.
Chad Booth (112), James Ost (125), Tyler Booth (135) and Nathan McLeod (140) moved into the semifinals.
Lake City senior Marcus Banducci is in the semifinals at 119 pounds after winning by technical fall over Chadd Webster of Post Falls.
In the 4A tournament, Lakeland is in 12th place with Nate Wright (103) and Brandon Richardson (152) into the semifinals today.
Kellogg is currently ninth, with Timberlake 16th and St. Maries 18th in the 3A tournament.
Zack Pickering (145), Chris Vergobbi (119) and Corey Squires (125) are into the semifinals for Kellogg.
John Morris (160) and Dylan White (285) are semifinalists for Timberlake, as is Ricky Avalos (171) for St. Maries.
Wallace wrestlers Chad Flatt (130), Jake Waters (140) and Nathan Cook (171) are semifinalists for the Miners, who are 13th in the 2A tournament.
