Area middle schoolers honored at Mathcounts

COEUR d'ALENE - North Idaho middle school students were presented with numerous awards during the Mathcounts Regional Competition on Feb. 9 at North Idaho College.

More than 60 students from middle schools throughout the region participated in Mathcounts, a national program intended to increase enthusiasm for math. The program is sponsored locally by the Coeur d'Alene chapter of the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers and North Idaho College.

The top two teams and the top five individuals will advance to the state competition March 13 in Boise.

The first place team was from Sandpoint Middle School, coached by Patrick Lynch. Team members included Jared Presnell, Christopher O'Donnell, Damion Forell and Michael Demko.

The second place team was from Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy, coached by Tisha Putz. Team members included David Conway, Jaeger Zollman, Dilara Tezcan and Brandon Ratcliff.

The third place team was from Lakes Magnet Middle School, coached by Eric Miller. Team members included Nathaniel Schnerly, Chase Sanchez, Scott Cummings and Blake Moreno.

Individual winners were first place Jaeger Zollman of Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy, second place Jared Presnell of Sandpoint Middle School, third place Christopher O'Donnell of Sandpoint Middle School, fourth place David Conway of Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy and fifth place Brandon Ratcliff of Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy.
