Chocolate Walk is scheduled Friday

The fifth annual Chocolate Walk is scheduled 5-8 p.m. Friday in downtown Coeur d'Alene.

People are welcome to stroll through more than 30 downtown businesses and sample free sweet delights, including handmade chocolates, brownies and chocolate fountains.

The stores will be open from 5-8 p.m. and participating businesses will be marked with balloons.

There will be free parking.

CASA program earns certification

COEUR d'ALENE - The First Judicial District CASA program was recently awarded certification by the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association.

The certification recognizes that "First Judicial District CASA Program, Inc. is in compliance with National CASA's high standards for quality child advocacy," according to a press release.

"The National CASA quality assurance process is very rigorous, and reflects our commitment to ensure every child we serve has the most powerful volunteer advocate working on their behalf," said Michael Piraino, CEO of the National CASA Association.

The First Judicial District CASA Program was started in 1993.The program served 721 children removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect during 2009.

Currently, there are 104 CASA volunteers and another 50 are needed.

A new training class is set to begin in April.

Lakeland teacher wins mini-grant

Nick Haynes, a physical education teacher at Lakeland High School, was awarded a classroom mini-grant in January for $300 from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE), a non-union professional teacher association.

Haynes will use the funds to purchase a set of compasses to teach orienteering and other outdoor navigational skills.

NWPE awards teacher scholarships and classroom mini-grants twice a year. All educators are eligible for the awards although NWPE members receive first preference. The next application deadline is March 31.

Kids' Carnival scheduled Saturday

For the third year, Art on the Edge and the Coeur d'Alene Arts and Culture Alliance will collaborate to present the annual Kids' Carnival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Resort Plaza Shops will be transformed into an interactive world of art that attracted more than 600 children last year.

"Dozens of local artists and art organizations joined together in a day of art-making for community children," according to a press release.

Workshops include painting with Steven Shortridge, float making with Greg Guillet, games with Figpickels and performances by the Lake City Playhouse.

There will be performances by the Tangled Roots Hip-Hop Dancers, Sorensen's Marimba Band and African drumming.
