Snowmobile parking changes at Lookout Pass

| December 4, 2010 8:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - A new parking area for snowmobile enthusiasts wishing to ride the areas surrounding Lookout Pass and Mullan is open.

The new parking area is along Mullan Road, behind the fish hatchery, about three miles east of Mullan.

The parking lot was made possible through the efforts of the Shoshone County Sportsman Association and was funded through a grant provided by the North Idaho Resource Advisory Committee.

The new location supplements parking that is available at Lookout Pass area and Shoshone Pavilions Park and provides parking for large trailers, restrooms, picnic tables, a fire pit, and a warming hut.

The opening of the new parking area is intended to provide better access to local trails, reduce congestion in the Lookout Pass area, and to provide a safer location for snowmobile riders hauling large trailers.

Trailers longer than 16 feet are no longer permitted at the Lookout Pass Ski area.

"The areas near Mullan and Lookout Pass are some of our most popular snowmobile areas on the forest," said Deputy District Ranger Kim Johnson. "Opening up the parking area helps to improve safety and reduce congestion at Lookout Pass while providing better snowmobile facilities nearby."
