Turn that 'no' into a big 'yes'

| August 27, 2010 9:00 PM

Supporters of a property tax increase to build a technical high school out on the Rathdrum Prairie, you're amazing. By garnering more than 58 percent "yes" votes countywide, you have met an astonishing challenge; you've made local history. In the worst economic times most citizens have ever encountered, your worthy goal was embraced by many who were able to see beyond their immediate financial troubles.

But today's editorial is not about what led to success on Tuesday. That will come Sunday. Today we focus on 3,827 Kootenai County citizens who cared enough about the issue to go out of their way in this special election and cast a ballot. These are the 3,827 who voted "no."

We concede that the "no" tally probably includes some who have never supported a tax increase in their life, and likely never will. That's their right.

But we also submit that many among the 3,827 would have voted for the measure were they not facing such desperate times. Their voice, though in a minority, should be heard. It also should be respected.

Our hope is that in the years ahead, from the time ground is broken for KTEC to the day expansion is demanded and taxpayers are once again urged to respond, those "no" voters are won over. That's the next great challenge KTEC supporters face: Producing quality products that reward taxpayers of every persuasion.

The quality products will begin with creation of good local jobs through design and construction of the facility. Emphasis should be placed on "local."

The quality products will continue with long-term employment opportunities for staff and faculty when the school opens three autumns from now.

Most of all, the quality products will be the KTEC students themselves. It is our sincere hope that even those who voted "no" this week will say "yes" when they see the quality craftsmanship and receive the superb health care provided by tomorrow's KTEC graduates.
