Trojan girls open with tie

POST FALLS - Freshman Alexis Smith scored goals in the 20th and 60th minute as Post Falls tied Sandpoint 2-2 on Friday in the season opener for both teams.

"The girls were pretty nervous," said first-year Post Falls coach Becky Thompson, a Trojan alum. "I know that the upperclassmen were excited about the tie, but I had higher expectations. Once we got settled, we were fine."

Hannah Griesmier scored in the 15th minute for Sandpoint.

Hannah Slinkard had nine saves for Post Falls, which travels to Lakeland on Wednesday.

COEUR d'ALENE - Sophomore Brittany Amburn had five saves for the Timberwolves in a draw with the Bears in a nonleague match at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

"There were definitely some nerves for the first game out," Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. "Defensively, we were really organized and had some good chances, but we need to work on the final product in front of the net."

Lake City travels to Sandpoint on Aug. 30.

RATHDRUM - Natalie Beaton scored two goals to lift the Hawks past the visiting Tigers in the nonleague opener for both at Corbit Field.

"We did some good stuff on possessions tonight," Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said. "We just struggled with finishing some of them."

Timberlake was held to two shots on goal.

"We played a really good first half," Timberlake coach Steve Michaels said. "We started making some mistakes and Lakeland capitalized on them."

Lakeland travels to Coeur d'Alene today. Timberlake hosts Kellogg on Wednesday.

ST. MARIES - The visiting Vandals defeated the shorthanded Lumberjacks in a nonleague match.

St. Maries had only nine players eligible due to some players not having the mandatory 10 practices in before the first match.

"We looked really good," first-year St. Maries coach Paul Ebert said. "I was real impressed with how the kids worked. It was a great game and I saw a lot of good things today."

No statistics were provided.

St. Maries will host Priest River on Wednesday.

BONNERS FERRY - The Badgers scored three unanswered goals in the second half to down the Hawks in the season opener for both schools.

Chase Campbell had six saves for Lakeland, which hosts Moscow next Monday.

"We had several starters out because they didn't have enough practices," Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. "Bonners Ferry is a good team and was probably in better shape that we were."

Andre Zarate had a goal and an assist for the Badgers.

ST. MARIES - The host Lumberjacks battled to a scoreless tie with the Vandals in the nonleague opener for both.

"I was thrilled," St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. "We've never played a team from southern Idaho before. They had 36 players on their varsity team, so to hold them scoreless, I was very pleased. Our defense played extremely well."

Judd Sempel had two saves for St. Maries, which hosts McCall again today at 10 a.m.
