Henry Balliet, 89

Henry Balliet, 89, died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends, on Monday, Aug. 16, 2010. Henry was born in Temvik, N.D., on April 5, 1921, to Heinrich and Rosina (Nathan) Balliet.

The family moved to Linton, N.D., where Henry grew up and graduated from high school. He attended State Normal and Industrial College in Ellendale, N.D., for two years, and then enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1942, where he served for three years. He returned to Ellendale and finished his bachelor's degree in education in 1947. He later earned his master's in school administration at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

On April 24, 1943, Henry married Beatrice Enger in Washington, D.C. They were blessed with six children - two boys and four girls. Henry worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for approximately 30 years as a teacher/administrator. His work took him and the family to Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Alaska.

Henry retired to Coeur d'Alene where he and Bea built their home and have resided ever since. Their retirement years allowed them to enjoy many church and community activities. Henry's greatest love was for his family. Other interests and hobbies ranged from world travel to model trains to wood shop projects.

Henry was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Rathdrum, the Sam Rodius Community Organization and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, nine siblings and a daughter, Bonnie Collins of Ava, Mo.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Beatrice, and two sons, Wayne Balliet and wife Cindy of Bismarck, N.D., and Wallace Balliet and wife Clarine of Valentine, Neb.; three daughters, Beverly Chapman and husband Michael of Buffalo, Wyo., Brenda Stapleton and husband Eric of Spokane, Wash., and Betty Donat of Rathdrum; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Rathdrum. An additional service and the burial will take place later in Linton. Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel, has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements.
