KTEC: Stop filling the money pit

| August 13, 2010 10:00 PM

At what point does the public say "enough is enough?" KTEC wants the public in three school districts to vote for $10,000,000 in bonds. The school is to teach vocational classes already available through some school districts, Riverbend School and junior colleges. The Meyer family donated 10 acres of land near Lancaster and Meyer roads.

The property so generously "donated" to KTEC was after the Lakeland School District purchased 30 acres in the same area for $1.1 million. Well above market value. Property of equal size is currently priced at $100,000.

Ask a school board member why they used $1,100,000 taxpayer money in 2009 for $100,000 piece of land and they will hide behind third-party appraisals from 2005 and 2006. KTEC is to be run by an independent board not controlled by any of the three school districts. They are a group of community leaders, school officials and business owners that gathered to create KTEC. Unlike normal school board members, each of the board members is allowed to profit from KTEC in one form or another.

"How much more will KTEC ask for?" You may ask? Current estimates are that operation of KTEC will cost the taxpayers approximately $3,000,000 each year for the unforeseeable future. If the bond passes taxpayers will pay about $11 million up front with another $3 to $5 million each year thereafter. Please say "enough is enough" with me on Aug. 24 and vote NO on the KTEC bond.
