WAC changes basketball tournament format

DENVER - Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson announced that the league will change its postseason men's and women's basketball tournament format, effective for the 2011 tournament.

The change, recommended by WAC coaches and approved by the league board of directors this summer, will give the top two teams a bye into the semifinals.

The move also results in two games per day in both tournaments, outside of the championship Saturday.

The 2011 WAC tournament will be held March 9-12 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Idaho volleyball tabbed to place sixth in WAC

DENVER - Idaho senior and former Moscow High standout Kelsey Taylor was named to the 2010 All-Western Athletic Conference preseason team and the Vandals were picked to finish sixth in the WAC polls by the league coaches.

The Vandals are coming off a 15-15 season in 2009, which includes an 11-5 mark and third-place finish in the WAC.

"We don't mind being picked sixth," Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan said. "That's not where we want to finish, but we know we're going to have to work hard every day to prove people wrong. That's a fair pick based on what we lost after last year."

Taylor played in all 117 games for the Vandals last year, totaling 189 kills at outside hitter. She will slide back into the middle blocker spot in 2010, where she totaled 108 kills and 110 blocks in a reserve role in 2007 and '08.

Hawaii was picked to win the league, with New Mexico second and Fresno State third. Utah State and Boise State are picked to finish ahead of the Vandals, with Nevada, Louisiana Tech and San Jose State rounding out the WAC standings.

Hawaii junior Kanani Danielson was the unanimous pick for the WAC Preseason Player of the Year.

Idaho opens the season against Weber State at the Nike Cougar Invitational on Aug. 27 in Pullman.

Also, the WAC announced that ESPNU will broadcast two Idaho Vandal volleyball matches in 2010.

Games against Utah State on Oct. 6 and Hawaii on Oct. 21 will be broadcast live.

The WAC tournament championship match will also air live on ESPNU on Wednesday, Nov. 25.
