Zala Medical: Taking you from average to awesome

| April 28, 2010 9:00 PM

Zala Medical wants to take you from average to awesome - rejuvenating your natural beauty with an array of treatments designed to eliminate the signs of aging without making you look overdone.

"We try to enhance the person's own looks. We really emphasize something natural," said Sarina Brumley, PA-C, and member of the Zala team.

Zala achieves the naturally beautiful and youthful look with a variety of treatments and services.

Among them is Active FX, the gold standard of fractionated CO2 laser and No. 1 single laser treatment in the United States. It is popular for a reason.

"In just one treatment, they really do look five to 10 years younger," Brumley said.

Zala can apply the fractionated laser not only to the face, but to the neck and areas of the body as well. Combining the laser with other treatments can result in even more spectacular rejuvenation.

Zala also offers Botox and Dysport - non-surgical injections that can eliminate lines and wrinkles - as well as dermal fillers Radiesse, Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm, which are used to reduce lines and replace the volume lost in the aging process and enhance cheeks, lips, hands, eyelid hollows, and more. The liquid lift uses a combination of injection techniques and products to give an instant facelift without surgery.

Some of the treatments offered through Zala Medical can deliver results with no downtime, such as Thermage. Thermage is an FDA-approved radiofrequency device used to tighten skin on the face and body with only one treatment. It can even reduce cellulite.

Other services include vein treatments; photofacial skin rejuvenation capable of reducing and eliminating sun damage, acne and rosacea; hair removal; permanent cosmetics; and scar treatments.

Skin care is another important aspect of Zala's services.

Zala staff consider skin care to be comparable to daily toothbrushing and flossing, and laser and injection treatments to be comparable to dental checkups, said Nancy Andrews, RNC, another member of the Zala team.

Among the services offered is the Obagi Blue Peel, a refreshing peel that takes off the whole outer layer of dead skin to expose youthful, fresh, new skin.

"We are one of the few places that offer it in the Northwest," Andrews said.

The services and treatments are administered by a staff with impressive experience and loyal followings.

Andrews has been a nurse for 29 years and started in aesthetics five years ago. A national injection trainer, she thinks of the face as a canvas and uses varying needle lengths and different products for different layers of skin to create a symmetrical, refreshed look.

"It's really sculpting. It's face art," Andrews said.

Brumley has more than 13 years in the aesthetics industry and has experience in both dermatology and plastic surgery, giving her unique insight into both bone structure and skin.

"The fact that I've worked in both fields has given me the ability to do better overall treatment," she said.

In addition, Brumley is a Dysport injection trainer who has taught advanced injection techniques to numerous physicians and nurses. Zala is the area's main provider of Dysport.

Brumley said she believes it's important to give patients an honest assessment of their needs, in carefully selecting patients for particular procedures, and in not treating her job like sales. It is better to recommend a treatment that will give someone the results they want rather than to sell something that may give only minor improvement and have the client become dissatisfied, she said.

"I will refer to surgery if that's truly what they need," Brumley said.

Other members of the team are:

• David King, MD, a board-certified surgeon and board-certified phlebologist specializing in Thermage, injections and veins.

• Kendra Ottum, a medical aesthetician highly trained in prescription skin care. Sheis also a certified laser technician and has eight years experience as an aesthetician.

• Tanya Jerome, CPCT, a certified permanent make-up artist known for natural-looking and long-lasting results. She has eight years experience in the field as well.

All of them do their best to make people feel comfortable, manage pain, follow up with people, and deliver results that will keep clients coming back. The only way to really learn a patient's face is to have the patient keep returning, Brumley said.

"You need to stick with one person so they can learn what it is you're trying to achieve and follow up with you," Ottum said.

It is also important to stick to a program. Medical-grade skin care can actually build collagen, and injectables such as Botox and fillers can prevent wrinkles from becoming deep.

"These procedures offer preventative maintenance, one may put off having surgery longer and look better while waiting," Brumley said.
