CEUR: Decrying spelling's decline
It has been a thorn in my side for a long time and finally a visitor from out of state had to bring it to the attention of the public through a letter to the “Press.”
Carol A. Scaggs of Eureka, CA wrote that she saw “Ceur d’Alene Ave” stamped on a downtown sidewalk. Why do so many people have a difficult time learning to spell the name of the city where they live?
I see it over and over again in businesses and even in the “Press.” The captions over articles are spelled COEUR d’ALENE. When the letters are in capitals - all the letters should be capitalized or it is misspelled. I questioned someone at the “Press” about this & was told that that is the way the A.P. spells it. Well, we surely should spell it incorrectly if the A.P. does so!
It is unfortunate that no on e seems to care. No wonder we Idahoans are considered ignorant by many.
