The Kootenai County Relay for Life is May 21-22 at the Greyhound Park and Event Center.

The 18-hour event starts at 6 p.m. Friday and ends at noon Saturday.

Johna Nelson, publicity co-chair, said that so far, they have 49 teams and 420 people registered. Last year's relay raised about $93,000.

Nelson is hoping at least another 11 teams sign up.

"Relay For Life is important to me because I've seen the effects cancer has had on friends and family," she wrote.

In 1998, her friend Dawn, just 20 years old at the time, was diagnosed with leukemia.

After a two-year battle, two relapses, several weeks of chemotherapy and radiation and a bone marrow transplant, she is a nine-year survivor.

"Since then, I have known many other people who have been diagnosed and until we find a cure, I will continue to celebrate, remember and fight back," she wrote.
