Campbell's homer sparks Lakeland to sweep of Moscow

RATHDRUM - Senior Chelsea Campbell hit a walk-off home run in the first game, and the Lakeland Hawks went on to sweep the Moscow Bears 1-0 and 7-0 in 4A Inland Empire League play Saturday.

Campbell, who hits third in the Hawks' lineup, led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a shot over the left field fence.

"She's been hitting very well for us, so it was nice to see all her hard work pay off," Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said.

Jamie Klopatek allowed just a fourth-inning single for Lakeland (9-5, 4-0 4A IEL). She struck out 10 and walked two.

In the second game, sophomore Ashley Metcalf pitched her first varsity shutout, striking out seven and scattering six hits. She also hit a two-run single in the fourth inning. Cortney Schelin's two-run single highlighted a five-run fifth.

Moscow dropped to 1-9, 0-2.

Lakeland plays a makeup game at Lake City on Monday.

POST FALLS - Richelle Ashburn struck out 12 and hit a two-run double in the first inning of the opener for the host Trojans, who split a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader with the Bengals.

Ashburn went 3 for 3 and scored two runs for Post Falls (8-5, 3-3).

Lewiston (13-7, 3-5) broke the second game open with eight runs in the fourth inning.

Post Falls plays host to Moscow on Wednesday in a doubleheader.

ST. MARIES - Jaylee Sines hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Lumberjacks in the first game of an Intermountain League sweep of the Badgers.

"It was kind of nice to get a couple wins after losing (Friday) at Timberlake," St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. "Bonners Ferry kept things close in the first game, but we finally got our bats going. Overall, I was pretty pleased."

Tia Asbury had 10 strikeouts in the second game and Dusti Huddleston was 1 for 2 with three RBIs for St. Maries (6-4, 4-2 IML), which travels to Kellogg on Tuesday.

PRIEST RIVER - Sophomore Nicole Cameron won both games and went 6 for 9 at the plate for the visiting Tigers in an Intermountain League sweep of the Spartans.

"We've played six games in the past three days, so I was very happy to see how we responded today," Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. "To come out here and work our tails off like we did really showed a lot."

The Tigers went 6-0 over the three-day span, defeating Bonners Ferry, St. Maries and Priest River to start league perfect (6-0) and move to 8-7 overall.

Sophomore Kodi Kuykendall went 8 for 9 on the day for Timberlake, which hosts Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

Spartan senior catcher Dani Hawes went 6 for 9 with a double and triple. Priest River plays at Bonners Ferry next Saturday.
